Kitchen remodel cost in Los Angeles: what sets the price

By Home Pro Green Remodeling Inc. · Published November 2, 2026

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Los Angeles?

A kitchen remodel in Los Angeles starts around $25,000 for a same-layout refresh and around $45,000 for a full remodel with new cabinets, counters and appliances. GreatBuildz, a Los Angeles contractor-matching service, puts a cosmetic refresh at $25,000 to $45,000 and a mid-range remodel at $45,000 to $65,000,1 and the Houzz 2026 Kitchen Trends Study puts the national median for a major remodel of a kitchen under 250 square feet at $46,000.2 The price climbs from there with the layout, the cabinets and what is behind the walls.

These are general ranges from outside sources. They are not Home Pro's prices and they are not a quote. The real number for your kitchen comes from a look at the room and a written scope.

What do published sources say a kitchen remodel costs?

Lower scopes first, larger scopes further down.

The sources do not measure the same thing. Houzz reports what homeowners nationwide said they spent, Cost vs. Value prices one sample project in the Los Angeles market, and the contractor pages describe their own ranges by scope. That is why a single kitchen can fall in very different rows.

What decides the cost of a kitchen remodel?

  1. Whether the layout stays. GreatBuildz puts plumbing and electrical updates at around $3,000 when the floor plan stays the same and around $10,000 when the sink, range or other connections move.3
  2. The cabinets. Cabinets are the largest single cost in most kitchen remodels.36 GreatBuildz puts semi-custom cabinets at $10,000 to $20,000 and custom cabinets at $25,000 or more.3
  3. Counters and backsplash. GreatBuildz puts countertops and backsplash at $8,000 to $12,000.3
  4. Appliances. GreatBuildz puts a standard appliance package at $10,000 to $15,000 and high-end appliances at $30,000 or more.3
  5. The electrical service. Right Image Builders notes that many 1950s San Fernando Valley houses still have 60 to 100 amp panels, and a modern kitchen often needs a 200 amp service.6
  6. Walls. GreatBuildz puts opening up the floor plan at $10,000 to $50,000, and that work needs a structural permit.3 Structural design has to be signed by a licensed engineer or other licensed design professional.10
  7. What is behind the walls. Aggregate Construction Group suggests holding 10 to 15 percent for hidden conditions, and more for homes built before 1978.5 GreatBuildz suggests 10 to 20 percent.3

What is the most expensive part of a kitchen remodel?

Cabinets. Both GreatBuildz and Right Image Builders name cabinets as the largest line in a kitchen budget.36 Moving walls or plumbing can cost more than the cabinets when the layout changes.3

Is $10,000 enough to renovate a kitchen?

Usually only for a partial update, such as paint, hardware or a few new pieces. Thumbtack's Los Angeles average range for a kitchen remodel is $12,471 to $40,909,7 and the national median for a minor kitchen remodel is $20,000.2

Is $30,000 enough to remodel a kitchen?

It can be, if the layout stays. GreatBuildz says a kitchen under $30,000 is possible when the sink, range and refrigerator stay where they are, and it calls that budget a refresh.3 The Los Angeles average job cost for a minor midrange kitchen remodel in Cost vs. Value 2025 is $29,765.4

Does a kitchen remodel in Los Angeles need a permit?

Yes, in almost every case. LADBS lists a kitchen remodel with no structural changes as an Express Permit, with no plan check.8 Moving walls or openings, or adding fixtures through existing walls, sends the permit to a Construction Services Center with plans.9 A new or moved gas line needs a plumbing permit.11 The city sets the permit fees, and the contract should say whether they are included. We pull the permits, and the contract should name who does. More in our kitchen remodel permit guide.

What is the 30% rule for renovations?

It is a planning rule of thumb, not a law: keep a full renovation at or under about 30 percent of the home's value. Mayflower, a remodeling contractor that explains the rule, suggests a kitchen at about 5 to 15 percent of the home's value.13

How do you get a written price for your kitchen?

  1. Decide what stays: the sink, range and refrigerator locations, and any walls.
  2. Pick the cabinet type (stock, semi-custom or custom), the counters and the appliances, because those set most of the price.
  3. Get at least three written bids for the same scope.14
  4. Check each contractor's license on the CSLB site.15
  5. Sign a written contract. California requires one for home improvement work over $500, and it lists the work, the price, the payment schedule and who gets the permits.12
