How long does a bathroom remodel take in Los Angeles?
How long a bathroom remodel takes in Los Angeles depends on the permit path, material lead times and what is found behind the walls.
For reference, one Los Angeles contractor guide (Aggregate Construction Group) published in June 2026 puts active construction at about three to six weeks, and the whole project, counting design, selections and permits, at about six to twelve weeks.1 Those are that company's figures. They are general reference points, not a schedule for any one project.
What is the order of work?
The order below is a common one for a bathroom with a new shower and tile and no structural change.1
- Design and selections. Layout, tile, fixtures and vanity are chosen, and long-lead items are ordered.
- Permit. The permit path depends on the work (see below).
- Demolition. Old tile, fixtures and vanity come out, and the walls are opened where needed.
- Rough plumbing and electrical. New lines and circuits go in. Your permit may call for an inspection depending on the work, but for most remodels LADBS requires one final inspection when the work is complete.4
- Waterproofing and shower floor. This has a cure time that should not be rushed.1
- Tile. Wall and floor tile are set, then left to cure.
- Fixtures, vanity, paint. The room starts to look finished.
- Final inspection and walkthrough. The city's final, then a punch list.
How does the permit fit the schedule?
A bathroom remodel with no structural changes can use an LADBS Express Permit, which needs no plan check.2 A layout change needs a plan check at the counter, which LADBS says is reviewed the same day, in about 45 to 60 minutes for small and medium projects.3 LADBS asks that inspections be requested one business day ahead, so the date of each inspection is set by the city's calendar, not only by the crew.4 In most cases LADBS requires one inspection at the end, and larger jobs can have partial inspections.45
City Planning's community plans include Tarzana, Encino, Woodland Hills and Sherman Oaks.91011 Confirm your own address in ZIMAS first, because a property outside the city goes to another department.56
What slows a bathroom remodel down?
Four things most often:1
- Material lead times. Special-order tile, a custom vanity or a freestanding tub can take weeks. Ordering them before demolition protects the schedule.
- Inspection scheduling. The inspector's calendar sets the pace at each inspection.
- Changes mid-project. Moving the shower or changing the layout can reset parts of the schedule and re-trigger inspections. Changes go into a written change order.7
- What the wall hides. Old plumbing, rot or water damage found after demolition adds time.
Does moving the layout add time?
Yes. Moving the toilet, shower or sink means new plumbing runs, and a permit that is issued at a Construction Services Center with a counter plan check instead of an e-permit.4 The Aggregate Construction Group guide estimates a layout change can add a couple of weeks.1
Can I use the house during a bathroom remodel?
Yes, if you have another working bathroom. The one being remodeled is out of service for most of the on-site weeks. If it is your only bathroom, plan for that before demolition day.1
How do you keep a bathroom remodel on schedule?
Choose every material before demolition, order the long-lead items first, avoid mid-project changes, and ask for a written schedule that names the dates for demolition, tile, fixtures and the final inspection.1
